Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, after Athens, and the largest in both area and population in the region of Macedonia. It serves as the seat of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and is the capital of the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki, the Thessaloniki metropolitan area, as well as the administrative center of the Region of Central Macedonia and the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia and Thrace.
